Most of us want to come to work early. Usually, this is so we can take our time to settle in and prepare for a successful and productive day. That’s one reason. But, it’s not the only reason!
Nice to meet you, my name is Guillaume. My name sounds French for a reason: it’s where I come from. Not from Paris, as you may be tempted to assume, but Nantes, a green city in the west of France.
I am an enthusiastic software engineer, and, later this year, I will return to France to continue studying at one of the top engineering schools in the country. While I look forward to this immensely, I am also conscious of a time not too long ago when I started to get bored of IT. How could this be? IT is a passion of mine. I feel it in my bones, my mind, even in my heart. It’s my professional calling.
Still, and as can happen to any of us, I became disinterested in my chosen field for a period. For me, this happened because of a lack of human interaction and opportunities to collaborate on projects as a team. This is sort of typical of IT, and for the most part I don’t mind this one bit.
So I wanted to give a creative agency a shot. (You know, to see what’s behind the buzzword.) That’s how I came to accept a position in the development team at Mo Works.
Motivation: Maslow’s Pyramid
With this pyramid, I shall explain to you my life in Melbourne and the ways in which it has blossomed. All because I accepted an opportunity to refresh my passion, and work in a new kind of professional environment.
I share a flat in Melbourne, right in the middle of the city. (A dream come true, I know.) Anyway, I have enough money to eat, sleep, feel safe and live comfortably in Melbourne until my departure later this year. This means the first two floors of the pyramid are sorted!
So what about the others?
The 3rd, 4th, 5th floors are the responsibility of Mo Works. At first I was scared, but, thankfully, it has worked out just fine!
Because our team works well together, and feedback is welcome; because we talk, share, and laugh a little, and take our lunch together every day; because there is harmony, and we socialise in a positive way; we fulfil our love/belonging needs at the workplace.
When I was new at Mo Works, the team had no idea of how good or bad I would be at my job. Yet, they were confident about giving me tasks. Hopefully, I carried them out with success, but no doubt a third-hand (another team member) would have come out to help me if I’d run into troubles.
I made smaller then bigger decisions. I took on smaller then bigger responsibilities. And I got rewarded for pursuing the challenge of evolving of my work. Eventually, I satisfied my esteem needs.
At Mo Works, we’re not just trying to build a working website, or a semi-polished UI kit. Most of my colleagues are self-confessed perfectionists who will be more happy to make any changes to the smallest details of their work if they know that it will make the whole project a bigger success. In such an environment, where we strive to go beyond what’s required to do something amazing, and not as an enforcement, but from an earnest desire, we meet our self-actualisation needs at the workplace.
The Real Reason Why I Come to Work Early
You may have already guessed it, but the real reason I come to work early is for learning and self-accomplishment. My work is my reward and I want my work to be full of meaning.
So I come to work early to try new things. Usually to broaden my understanding and knowledge of topics that I don’t encounter as a requirement of my job. This unconscious call is driven by a self-interest: I want to push my skills to limit.
The recipe for success? I don’t know. For me, getting to work early is a good place to start. It is a small part of a larger plan to go outside of my comfort zone and enrich my career.
