When the Victorian Government called upon creatives to help them secure a bright future for the creative industry we didn’t think twice, and neither did 10,000 other Victorians.

When the Victorian Government called upon creatives to help them secure a bright future for the creative industry we didn’t think twice, and neither did 10,000 other Victorians.

The Creative Industries Taskforce may have gotten more than they bargained for when they launched an open forum for creatives to share their vision for the future of the Victorian creative industry. Over five weeks around 8,500 people contributed to the online discussion and 1,000 attended workshops around the state, all eager to give their two cents about how to increase the public value of our beloved industry.

You might not have time to go through each suggestion one-by-one, so here’s a run down of the themes that made a regular appearance:

  • Importance of video game industry

  • Affordable access to studio spaces

  • Valuing contribution of independent artists

  • Providing better access to business skills development and practitioners

  • Value of collaboration across disciplines

  • Need to invest in new ideas

  • Need for research and development

  • Importance of arts education

  • Putting focus on diversity and inclusion

We’re particularly excited that our own ideas were pretty much summed up by these overarching themes. In case you’re wondering, the ideas we threw into the ring involved investing in new ideas like design integration, and creating grants and mentoring programs to help creative agencies lead the change. Fingers crossed they get a mention in the final strategy!

Now that the suggestions are in, the Creative Industries Taskforce has to think long and hard about how to use them to create a killer strategy that will direct government spending to the right places. Making good investments will not only set us creative-types on the path to long and prosperous future, it will show the rest of the world that the creative talent in Victoria is a force to be reckoned with.
