We are pleased to dub our recent Behance Portfolio Review a great success! This was the second Behance event that we have run for the year, and we were thrilled to be part of a great forum that brings creative professionals together. Behance is an online platform that allows members of the creative industry to showcase their work and receive the latest news and updates from the industry. By volunteering to run Behance Portfolio Review events, we are helping to bring the online Behance community into offline spaces and giving creative professionals the opportunity to mingle with other people in the industry.
The evening kicked off with a fantastic introductory speech about career building delivered by Sarah McGregor, Head of Copy at Leo Burnett, and then our 47 participants divided into small groups to receive feedback on their work from talented reviewers. After we’d picked the brains of the reviewers for all their valuable advice, we ventured back to our nearby Docklands office for drinks and nibbles which was a great opportunity to network and socialise with other people from our local creative community.
This event was a wonderful opportunity for creative professionals to discuss their ideas in an open forum. As a reviewer, Alberto Talegon was impressed by the standard of participation, as all the participants were happy to open to the rest of the group to give and receive feedback. Alberto has worked for worldwide agencies and worked with global brands such as Coca-Cola and BMW, so he had a wealth of knowledge to share and endeavoured to give his best advice to his group. He thought it was a fantastic gathering for reviewers and participants alike, as ‘it was a great opportunity to network’.
Online Platforms are the way Forwards
As members of the creative industry ourselves, we know that online platforms such as Behance are important tools to help us adapt to the expanding online creative world. The Creative Director of Mo Works, Mo Hamdouna, has expertise in digital arts, advertising and graphic design, and has worked in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Australia, and he believes that online platforms are extremely important for young designers. Mo raves about the possibilities opened up by online platforms as they can help inspire designers, show them what can be done and help them connect with other creatives.
Alberto also sings the praises of social platforms like Behance, as he believes that it is priceless and ‘possibly the biggest amount of talent per square meter you can find in the world’. He thinks that Behance is ‘the best shopwindow a creative can have nowadays’ because it allows us to stay in the loop with what others are creating, whilst also generating great opportunities for connecting with others.
The Future of the Creative Industry
Mo believes that the future is bright for the creative industry, and he’s not the only one who is excited about what’s to come. Alberto envisages that the future will be packed with talent and tools are becoming so easy to use that everyone can become a creator. He can’t see the industry drastically changing, but he can see it becoming more social and more mobile. Alberto predicts that the biggest change will be the ‘final globalisation of the internet’ and being able to access it for free. This would be the ideal scenario in his eyes, as it will ‘push people to try to generate and create quality content’ and if they don’t, ‘people won’t consume it’.
Networking is Essential
The most important part of the Behance Event was creating a community where knowledge and experience could be shared. Mo believes that networking is especially important for freelancers and job seekers, because nothing opens more opportunities than a referral from the right contact. Alberto also stressed the importance of networking and collaboration and agrees with Mo that ‘nothing will get you your dream job but a really good connection you made at one point in your life’. He believes that networking is all about advertising yourself, and sometimes it is ‘more about listening than speaking’.
We loved the opportunity to welcome the local creative community into our office and it proved a great place for entertaining. We were chuffed to hear that Alberto had a lovely experience with us, and he could sense the immense passion that drives everything we do.
We look forward to hosting our next Behance event and hope to see you there!
